Medical Massage for Animals

Medical massage for animals involves the location, interpretation and treatment of soft tissue problems by a veterinarian familiar with canine anatomy and physiology. Myofascial restriction and soft tissue shortening contribute to a wide assortment of physical and medical problems for animals that may benefit from medical massage. Medically informed palpation allows the veterinary massage therapist to identify the link between form and function and a sensitized skill at palpation can allow the veterinarian to identify the source of discomfort and impaired mobility. Medical massage differs from sports massage and relaxation massage and directly addresses physical problems with readily identifiable benefits. It is often used to help relieve discomfort caused by “trigger points” and may also be used in conjunction with acupuncture, diet, laser treatment and stretching to help canine athletes and geriatric pets.
